About the Book
Preface and Translator's Note

Riflessi D’inchiostro (Reflections of Ink), the poems of Rocco Giancarlo Racco, were originally written in English.

The poems represented here, traditional in style, have been translated into Italian with the aim of preserving the original poetic spirit and the vividness of the imagery. Particular attention has been given to maintaining the tone and stylistic qualities of the English text, offering the reader a fluent and coherent experience without distorting the original meaning.

Riflessi D’inchiostro (Reflections of Ink) is a work steeped in bitterness yet touched by a faint hue of sweetness; it is pervaded by deep melancholy, which nonetheless allows a subtle glimmer of hope to fragility. The poet imbues his verses with symbolic and emotional resonance that, despite the inevitable differences, recalls the celebrated word of Giuseppe Ungaretti: “M’illumino / d’immenso” (“I am illuminated / with immensity”). One can also detect echoes of Eugenio Montale’s poetry, particularly Meriggiare palladio and assort, which exalts the meditative dimension, rendering dense images tangible while revealing a profound expressive urgency.

The first section of the work focuses on the many facets of human experience, exploring themes such as love, beauty, hope, victory, defeat, dreams and the realm of imagination. This section delves into existential complexities, examining in particular the poet’s inner world, his relationship with language, and the creative process. The final section turns toward the darker dimensions of human life, addressing themes such as survival, victimization, suicide, and death.

This anthology leads the reader through an emotional, reflective journey, unveiling profound truths with both discretion and intensity. Through powerful imagery and visionary language, the text immerses the reader in complex and unsettling inner landscapes. Its expressive choices, often characterized by apocalyptic tones and radical invocation, create a state of emotional tension in which restlessness, isolation and the yearning for freedom, intertwine.

This anthology draws its inspiration from the poem Alchemia dell’anima (Creativity), which serves as its generative core, both thematically and stylistically.

Riflessi D’inchiostro (Reflections of Ink) arises from an intense and troubled inner experience in which the author, secluded with the intimate space of writing, confronts the unrelenting flow of thought. In the silence of creative solitude, the poet transforms mental disorder into poetic act: through moments of clarity and episodes of disorientation, he translates emotions and reflections into words, and words into verse, fragments of an existential experience marked by tension, confusion, and the search for meaning.

Life can be understood as an inner pilgrimage, and poetry emerges as the privileged medium through which this journey finds expression and significance. The reader is invited to embark on a shared voyage with the author, one articulated in nineteen compositions imbued with intense emotional energy: sighs, shivers, layers of darkness, muffled cries, tears, and nostalgia. Through engagement with these texts, the act of reading becomes transformative.
